Peter Schiffer
Peter Schiffer was born in Charlotenburg, Berlin on 7th September 1907, the younger son of Dr. Fritz and Else nee Knopf Schiffer. He grew up in an emancipated environment, losing his father when only 12 years old.
Peter was educated at the Loosesche Private School and the Kaiserin-Augusta-Gymnasium, graduating in 1926. He studied for 5 semesters at the Law Faculty of the University of Berlin, the final semester being undertaken at the University of Breslau. He passed his trainee exams in 1930 and obtained his Doctorate from the Breslau university in 1931. For 5 years he worked in the courts of the Berlin district.
The Nurenberg Laws of 1935 would ensure that he would be unable to practice in Germany. Intending to emigrate to Palestine, he became an apprentice mechanic in a garage in order to prepare himself for his new life which commenced in 1936. It has to be said that once in the country, he became very patriotic.
He met and married Rhea (Rivka) Jean Glick (4.09.1913) who had emigrated from New York, U.S.A. with her parents and older sister Chaya when she was 8 years old. Her father was a Rabbi (Zvi) and the family were ardent Zionists.
Peter served in the Hagganah and the Israel Defense Force during the War of Independence. Once in Palestine, he requalified as a lawyer and opened a practice in Rothschild Boulevard, Tel Aviv. He was an active member and made President of the Menorah Lodge of B’nei Brith in Tel Aviv.
Together Peter and Rhea had 2 sons, Gabriel (Gabi) Frederick (Freddy) 20.02.1939 and Michael (Mickey) Claud 9.03.1944.
