Notes for Else KNOPF
Else née Knopf Schiffer was born ion 10th October 1882 the youngest of three children of Neumann Knopf and Agnes née Lehmann.
She was musically very gifted, she played the piano and sang. She was supposedly very clever, but not easy to get along with, especially with her parents though she was a dutiful daughter to them.
She married Dr. Fritz Schiffer who was a children’s specialist. Else helped him in his practice.
During the war, he served in the army but was very ill with heart disease. It is a known fact that this family did not adhere to any Jewish traditions at all although none of them were ever baptised which was not unusual in emancipated circles.
Fritz died at the age of 40 leaving his 38 year old widow to bring up two adolescent sons, Hans and Peter. As she had many friends in the world of the theatre, she became the manager of one of the Theatrical Agents where she was very successful. During these difficult times and especially during the period of inflation, the extended family looked after her.
In 1936, Else went to Palestine to visit her younger son Peter who had emigrated some years previously. Else returned to Germany and said ‘as long as they leave me my little flat, I will stay here, besides, I will not go until my mother and Grete and Trulle, (her Aunt and Cousin) can go as well. They were however, unable to leave because by that time, the world had already started closing its doors to Jews.
Else and the rest of the family were taken to concentration camps, Else being deported to Lodz on 18th October 1941 where she suffered kidney disease and subsequently perished in 1942. 261

Sue Mariner writes: Else Schiffer nee Knopf (born 18.10.1882) who was married to Dr. Fritz Schiffer. Fritz's father (whose name I do not know) was the sister of Emillie Schiffer who married Louis Cassirer. My grandfather died of natural causes in 1921 and my grandmother was deported to Lodz where she perished, I believe in 1942.
1460 Else’s sad fate is confirmed in the records of Yad Vashem of victims of the Holocaust:
