Notes for Sierlah HYMAN
Sierlah married Henry Cohen in 1880 in Sydney, registration no 194. Details can be seen in the Application to Marry registers at the Aust Jewish Historical Society which lists her as the daughter of Hyam Hyman, deceased and Jane Cohen. Her age was 23. Her residence was shown as Darlinghurst Road. Witnesses were Moses Moss and David Cohen. Friends of this application were Hy Cohen Senior and B Hyman.
PBC says 'she married Henry Emanuel Cohen, son of Abraham and Sophia Cohen (not related)' However evidence from Application to Marry registers at the AJHS certificates of marriage and death and Australian Dictionary of Biography show otherwise. The synagogue records show Henry Emanuel Cohen as marrying Sophie Frank, born in Germany.
The Henry Edward Cohen she married was from another family altogether.
The monumental inscription over her grave at Rookwood reads only 'our mother' - ref 72017, plot 578, old section. The cause of death was cerebral haemorrhage, hemiplegia and oedematous pneumonia. Her age was given as 43. She had been in the colony for 39 years, (ie about 1859).
Sydney Morning Herald 17 October 1898 page 1, Cohen, October 16 at 205 Victoria Street, Sierlah the beloved wife of H.E.Cohen in her 43rd year. For the funeral on page 10, The funeral of Mrs HE Cohen will leave 205 Victoria Street North this day at 1.30 pm from the Mortuary at 2.25.
Her certificate of death shows that she is definitely the daughter of Hyam Hyman and Jane Cohen which clears up any doubts that there might have been.
