Notes for Jane COHEN
The year of her birth is taken from the age shown at her date of death.

Assuming this is the correct person her death is recorded in the NSW BDM 1788 - 1888, registration number 3145/1878. Her parents were shown as Barnett and Sierlah. However what is strange was that she is not recorded as deceased on the application to Marry of her daughter to Henry Cohen.

It is not stated on her death certificate as to whether she was a widow or not. The informant was her son B H Hyman of Moncur Street, Woollahra. She had apparently been ill for some two or three years and the cause was a Cerebral Haemorrhage. I now hold a transcription of the certificate. There is no extant headstone over her grave which is in the old Jewish section. It was a single plot. Terry Newman now advises that both she and her husband were buried at Raphael's Cemetery (which is near Rookwood, but not part of it). From him I now have a photo of the grave.

According to the death certificate she had been 18 years in the colony and also that her marriage had taken place in London. The name of her spouse was shown, but not whether he was already deceased. Children of the marriage were 4 males and 3 females living, 1 male deceased.

Terry Newman has sent me details of the announcement in the Sydney Morning Herald of her death: -
HYMAN - Tuesday Mar 19 1878 p. 1
March 18, at her residence, Mount Auburn Villa, Moncur-street, Woollahra. Jane Hyman, relict of the late Hyam Hyman, of Sydney aged 62.

In the (AJGS) CD of the Old Jewish Cemetery at Rookwood, she is listed under unallocated graves. She does not have a headstone, but the information given is taken from the Burial Register Index at the great Synagogue.

Shown as her address at the time of the death of her mother (1854), was Old Kent Road, the wife of Hyam Hyman Furniture dealer. Admon of the estate was granted to her as was the value of the whole of the estate. (Admon IR 26/280 page 271 PDD 18 Dec 1854).

As to the time in which Hyam and Jane arrived in Australia I believe this to be in 1859/60. In a letter written by Samuel Cohen to his brother David in London dated 13 April 1859, a paragraph reads:-

'As to Hyam and Jane coming out, do not let that annoy you, it will not me. I will do all I ought to do, if they are not satisfied the country is quite large enough for them and God will prosper them is my Hope, and we will assist if prudent to do so! (sic) You know me and do not fear for me or them.'
