330His date of birth is calculated from age shown in certificate of death. This certificate shows place of death as 43 Upper William Street, (Sydney?), aged 83. His parents are listed as known, with father's occupation as shop keeper. The informant of the death was B H Hyman, nephew, 16 Rockwall Crescent, Potts Point. He had been 62 years in the colony of NSW. He was aged 22 when he was married in Sydney. The spellingof his parents names are as generally accepted Barnett and Sierlah (nee Levy), both deceased.
His certificate of death does not show the deceased children, ie, Jane, Barnett and David. Presumably these are correct.
According to a letter written in 1940 by Samuel Sydney Cohen to Percy Marks, President of the Australian Jewish Historical Society, Lewis Cohen came to Australia in 1831 on the ship Sovereign. This information can be seen in the first edition of the Sydney Morning Herald which contains an advertisement for the shop he has recently opened.
