Tilla Durieux, a famous German actress, is depicted here in a costume by Poiret that she wore in "Pygmalion." In July 1914, just prior to the outbreak of World War I, she and her husband, the art dealer Paul Cassirer, travelled to Paris in order to pose for Renoir mornings and afternoons for two weeks. This ambitious and monumental portrait, with its classicizing and pyramidal format, was painted when Renoir was so crippled with arthritis that he sat in a wheelchair with his brush strapped to his hand.
