Julie Kramer, Alexander Levin’s grandaughter writes: “Here is the only link (The Museum of the Hat Industry) I was ever able to find about my great grandfather, Alexander Levin, who I believe was murdered at Auschwitz. He owned a large hat factory in a town called Guben before WW2.
1428,1410The Yad Vashem database (
http://www4.yadvashem.org/) contains known names and details of victims of the Shoah. In this index there is no reference to an Alexander Levin. Nor is there any reference to Gubin or Guben. However it is possible he was not written down entirely correctly as this was often the case. In particular Levin might well have been written as Lewin (since V and W were almost interchangeable).
My guess is that this is probably my great grandfather's record. My mom was born in the early 1930s, so working backwards from my mom to her mother to my great grandfather, the birth date could make sense. I know he also resided and did business in Berlin and had an additional home and business in Guben.
The most likely is perhaps Alexander Lewin whose record was born below. If his grandaughter Dinah Cohn was born around 1932, and her mother around 1912, then her grandmother could have been born around 1892. Then Alexander Levin might plausibly have been born in 1896 as shown below. Great Grandaughter Julie Kramer reports “I know he also resided and did business in Berlin and had an additional home and business in Guben.”
