Notes for Jerrold Nathan JOSEPH
Census of 1881 London - 47 Bedford Square, London St Giles in the Fields. Jerrold's age was given as 29. He was living with his parents, two older unmarried sisters Sarah and Miriam as well as his nieces Amelia and Sarah Merton (aged 23 and 19).
In the census of 1871 he is probably the son of Moses and Rosetta aged 18 with sisters Sarah 25, Miriam 23, alice 22, Julia 16, all born New S Wales, Sydney and Amelia Merton aged 13 (Moses granddaughter) and Sarah Merton 7, born St Pancras.
All the children except Sarah were born in Sydney. Six servants were living in the house.
He is listed in the probate of his father's will as Jerrold Nathan Joseph of 17 Finsbury Pavement in the City of London, solicitor.
There is no birth record for a Jerrold in the NSW registrations, but there is a Joseph N Joseph born to Moses & Rosetta in 1851 which must be him. Reg no B1851482 136. I suspect that rather than have the name Joseph Joseph he altered the first part of the name.
In his application to marry he is listed as a bachelor, age 43 years, Residence NSW Club, temporarily and London 47 Bradford Square, London. Son of Moses.
In the census of 1901 he is living with Lillian and Rhoda at the Great Western Hotel, Praed Street, Paddington. His age is shown as 49, and also shown was the Finsbury Pavement address (his office).
Probate of his will was made on 11 July 1916 to Edward John Moss merchant Reginald Benn Cohen esquire and Lilian Julia Joseph widow. Effects UKL18,035 3s 5d. His address was listed as 1 Kensington Park-gardens Middlesex. The probate information shows his date of death as 13 June 1916.
