Notes for George Judah COHEN
AJHS Vol 13, part 4 p 623. 'George Cohen, brother of David and Abraham from Maitland arrived in Gunnedah in the late 1850's. From 1861 - 74 he was the town's postmaster....He built Roseneath.'

He is buried in Maitland Jewish cemetery. From the Gunnedah Family History Resources - George Cohen, brother of David and Abraham from Maitland, arrived in the late 1850's. From 1861 to 1874 he was the town's postmaster. He also ran a store from which he retired in 1891. Cohen's Bridge across the Namoi River, named after him, was opened by him in 1885. Previously there had been two crossings, Cohen's for transporting people in iron flat-bottomed boats, and Bennetts was the stock crossing, still used by drovers. By the 1870's a proper bridge was an urgent matter and it was finally built to the west of Cohen's crossing. In 1886 a larger bridge was built across the Namoi at Manilla. This was opened by Mrs Harry Levien, who husband had contested the seat of Tamworth against Bennett.

George Cohen built himself a large private residence, Roseneath. After George left, it was actually used as a church until 1895. George's sons Sam, Harry, Percy and Bert and his three daughters lived in Gunnedah for many years.

Many 'listmakers' and commentators on the Maitland Cemetery confuse him with George Judah Cohen son of Samuel, whereas he is his uncle.

I cannot find the details of birth for some of the listed children.
