Notes for Constance CUMMINGS-HALVERSTADTSTEAD
Her year of birth from Stuart Cohen which was later confirmed in her obituary and place from the US Census of 1920 and 1930. The maiden name of her mother was Cummings (Kate) which she used as her professional name.

Constance Cummings was a well-known actress. Peter Nathan told me in 2001 when I met him that she was still alive.

A website has a biography of her... the daughter of an attorney father and an opera-diva mother, she took dancing lessons in the hopes of landing the role of Diana in a stock-company production when she was aged 16. ... Upon her marriage to Benn Levy in 1933 she moved to England where she remained for the rest of her career.

The Times printed an obituary of her on 28 November 2005. this was sent to Stuart (and then on to me) by Bryan Cohen. Also enclosed was a cutting of a letter to the newspaper of 6 December 2005 as follows:

From Fred Kosten: Constance Cummings together with her husband, played a further role that had profound effects.

Early in 1939 Constance and Benn Levy enabled my sister Claire Rauter, and me to escape Nazi-occupied Austria on one of the last Kindertransport trains. They welcomed us into their Chelsea home and coped patiently and with great affection with the inevitable disruption that two children brought. This hospitality was later extended to our parents who happily survived to join us.

Our recollections of Constance, the actress, range from 1940 Ensa rehearsals in Chelsea to her performance in the 1996 Uncle Vanya at the Albury; memories which we cherish.
