Notes for Edward Henry SIMMONS

10 Oban
Built in 1898 as a private home for Mr & Mrs Edward Simmons who, with Mr Simmons' brother Walter were the main shareholders in Stawell's Oriental Mine. Features of this building were its commanding position, the balcony which was finished with beautiful hand turned wood lacework, imported tiles in the hall, a fine staircase window of stained glass, marble mantelpieces, verandah tiles obtained from the north of South Australia, the garden and the greenhouses. The total cost of the building was estimated at £4000. The building stayed in private ownership until purchased by the Returned Services League in 1948 for their use and museum of local and other war memorabilia.
