Notes for Dr Richard WALZER FBA
From a Wiki entry at https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Rudolf_Walzer:

Richard Rudolf Walzer FBA (born July 14, 1900 in Berlin, † April 16, 1975 in Oxford) was a German-British classical philologist, philosopher and orientalist. He specialized in Greek and Arabic philosophy and was a member of the British Academy.

He was born the son of the Jewish merchant Max Walzer and his wife Elfriede. In 1918 he passed his final exams at the Werner-Siemens-Realgymnasium in Berlin-Schöneberg. He first studied medicine and Hebrew at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin. After he had heard lectures with Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff, he moved in 1919 to the Gräzistik.

In 1927 he received his doctorate on Magna Moralia and Aristotelian ethics. He provided evidence for the prevailing opinion, according to which the Magna Moralia is not Aristotle's, against Hans von Arnim's attempt to identify the MM as an early work of Aristotle. In the same year he became an assistant at the University of Berlin, in 1932 he habilitated on studies on the unity of the Herodoteischen Geschichtswerk, became a Privatdozent for classical philology. In his inaugural lecture on Classical Studies and Oriental Studies, he clarified the tradition of Greek thought in Arabic philosophy.

In 1933 he was released as a Jew, while he visited Italy with his wife. Friends warned him against returning to Germany. Walzer remained in Italy until 1938, teaching Greek philosophy at the University of Rome and translating Heraclitus into Italian.

When Italy, too, became dangerous for Jews, he moved to Britain. In 1942 he found a position at Oriel College, Oxford University. At first he was a lecturer in Greek philosophy. In 1945 he became editor of medieval philosophy. In 1950 a chair for late Greek and medieval Arabic philosophy was created for him. In 1962 he moved from Oxford University of Oriel College at St Catherine's College.

In 1952 he was additionally honorary professor at the University of Hamburg. In 1953 and 1954, he conducted research at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) at Princeton, New Jersey. In 1956 he was elected a member of the British Academy. With Samuel Miklos star, he published from 1962 the journal Oriental Studies.

Walzer was married from 1927 to Martha Eva Sophie Cassirer, daughter of the publisher Bruno Cassirer.612
