Sad news - Our loved and lovely Sue Rowley died yesterday morning at 4.50 am after a very short decline and as a result of her advanced cancer. Once we have recovered some sense of equilibrium we will work out the details of how her life is to be celebrated and post an update for anyone who would like to be informed.

Many thanks to my wonderful friends and family for your warm birthday greetings. We're just back from a fabulous dinner at Transformer restaurant with Anna and Nick, Michael and Tay, and Lisa and David.Anna and Jessie came over for lunch and Jessie gave my a little wooden and felt salad bowl- with salad. Hi Mum! Just thought I'd check in, say hi, thinking of you and how's the snow?? Kaye said she had the boys for the week so I bet they were having a very spoilt and good time :-) were having a fabulous time - in Naples for the night and its just how I remember it ;-) yes, THAT good!! I like donating Normie's old stuff to Pets Haven - they do amazing work rescuing dogs (and other animals) from horrible conditions and death and do it on a shoestring budget, relying on donations but not sparing any expense on the animals. Normie likes that his old stuff gets to make other puppies happy too of course...

Update on my Farmhouse Direct foray. Nuts arrived from Nutsnmore (thanks Jym Tarrant); they are excellent and the pomegranate cardamon walnuts are amazing. Suds from Jones Potatoes and garlic (a lot of garlic!!) from The Farmer and the Chef have arrived too and look good.

I read about Farmhouse Direct in The Age recently. Great idea - an online farmers' market. I ordered olive oils and vinegar from Nuggetty Creek in the weekend and they were delivered this morning by the producer himself. So fantastic. Now I'm ordering haloumi from Little Creek Cheese, nuts from Nuts n More, cheese from Lochelian, potatoes from Jones and garlic from The Farmer and the Chef. Get terrific produce and bypass Coles and Woolies: yes!

Last night dinner at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Today the 'spouses' went to Torcello and Murano islands. Thisoening we had a boat tour of the Lagoon to 'inspect' the heroic engineering project that involves moveable barriers to protect Venicd against sea level rises. That's the subject of Jim's workshop. after lunch, the workers got down to business. I, taking advantage of my 'spouse' status, visited the Fortuny showroom. Amazing fabrics right there for buying. Not cheap so I'm thinking about it. Also walked the tourist circuit with a million other people. Won't do that again on a hurry.

The ferry from Barcelona to Livorno was fun, cabin comfortable and had a porthole. Jim was reminded of his last boat epic - on the Orcades when he was 4! This time we did not have an inexhaustible supply of lollipops and the fancy-dress parade was inadvertent on behalf of most participants! Fantastic hotel in Livorno, to which we must, alas, not say goodbye.

We spent many hours in the City Museum walking through the extraordinary excavation of the Roman town. Roads, house, dye-shops, places that prepared fish sauce and salted fish, and wine - so detailed and beautifully curated. In the afternoon we went to another Gaudi building - La Pedrera - actually built as an apartment block. Paella for dinner (better than the one we had at Yering, Anna). Tired but happy, we now have our endlessly-entertaining iPads! Did I mention that our hotel room is tiny?

We visited the amazing Palau Guell - Gaudi's architecture & interior design is so fantastic. And in the afternoon trotted off to the Picasso Museum. I also found a knitting shop nearby, I kid you not. I bought hand-dyed yarn by a local woman (just round the corner) so I'm pretty pleased about that. Right now we're straightening our spines before wandering out for dinner.

Train to Barcelona, a nice way to spend a day. Hope the mole made it, haven't seen him yet. A thief picked jim's pocket as he boarded the metro but a woman standing by the door grabbed back his wallet as the door closed. A salutary warning for us. Hope the mole takes care because they're disoriented at the best of times.

Avignon. Jim's speaking French and we're doing pretty well. Historic & charming town, warm sunny day. Hotel Garlande, with just 11 rooms, suits us & they went to great trouble to get the Internet working.

Ozenay (in Burgundy) was so lovely. Crocuses just popping up in fields, imagine that. Liz is a fantastic cook so meals were special. Chris & Liz have created a wonderful garden. Then off by train to Avignon.

A very nice day in Paris, taking in the Musee des Arts and Metiers and the Jewish History Museum. But plenty of time for brunch and strolling. Found boutiques in Bastille even if they were shut! Just back from dinner & settling down for a reading night.

Two great days in Gotenburg with Jim's (3rd) cousins, Peter Cassirer and Nils Woelfler. A leisurely visit to the Opera House and walk through the city yesterday and visit to the replica of an 18th c. Ship this morning. Wonderful meals prepared by Peter and generous hospitality. Happy little campers!
